Trading predictability for presence.

“Then he said to me, ‘This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.’” — Zechariah 4:6

If there’s one thing I love, it’s having a plan. Plans give us the comfort of knowing where the road turns, where the safety nets are, and what the future is supposed to look like. Plans make us feel in control and confident that our days are insured against the unexpected storms that will inevitably come our way.

With plans, life feels predictable and safe. Yet, as much as we crave a roadmap, the reality is that God rarely hands us the blueprint for our lives upfront.

If God revealed His plans in advance, one of two things would happen. We would either try to accomplish everything all on our own or, upon seeing all of life’s twists and turns, run away in absolute fear. Instead of offering us a static and easily outdated map for the journey, God offers us something far better: He gives us Himself. Like a Master Shepherd, He leads us step-by-step, day-by-day by the power of His Holy Spirit. It is in this way that we stay close to His heart, learn to familiarize ourselves with His voice, and live in daily, active dependence on Him.

“But why is this important?” you might ask. Well, because God calls us into spaces that often exceed our natural wisdom, resources, and abilities.

If we hold tightly to our own agendas and stay strictly within the bounds of our carefully laid out plans, we end up only accomplishing what we can achieve in our limited human power. Furthermore, we leave no room for the Spirit’s gentle nudges, sudden redirections, and sacred interruptions—the very ways God transforms us and reminds us He is actively present in our everyday lives.

When we unclench our fists and surrender our plans to the Lord, we open ourselves up to a divine partnership that gives us the opportunity and grace to do hard but beautiful, eternity-shaping things by the power of the Spirit that is at work in us. The result is a life anchored in grace, reaching far beyond the limits of our wildest imaginations.

To walk with God means trading the comfort of predictability for the liberating glory of His eternal presence. Our plans may give us a temporary sense of safety, but His leadership gives us strength for every hard step, peace in every unknown, and the joy of watching Him build a life far grander than anything we could ever build on our own.
